Area 51 Day Trip from Las Vegas
An Area 51 day from Las Vegas is a drive up the Extraterrestrial Highway to the town of Rachel. The Air Force site at Groom Lake is a restricted test range. The government has acknowledged a facility there used for aircraft testing. It does not have a visitor center, and this trip does not enter it.

Short history
State Route 375 was designated the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996. Rachel, a very small town along it, has spent decades as the public edge of that story. The Little A’Le’Inn is a roadside diner, bar, and motel that has traded on the traffic. It is a private business. A particular menu or opening hour is not something this page can promise.
Near the east end of SR 375, the Alien Research Center is a store marked by a large alien figure. It sells souvenirs. It is not an information office for the base, and it is not a museum with a research program you can join.
Practical visitor info
Hours and fees change. Check the site, the park, or the business before you go. This page does not quote a current price or a current opening time.
The numbers match the drive times and distances page. Read desert day-trip tips before a hot day, and seesample itineraries if you want to combine stops. The town list is Ghost Towns Near Las Vegas. Tonopah and the Extraterrestrial Highway are indexed under Weird Day Trips.
Drive from Las Vegas
Plan on about two and a half hours each way to Rachel, on the order of 150 miles. The usual route leaves Las Vegas on I-15 north, follows US-93 through Alamo, and joins SR 375 toward Rachel. Five hours of driving is the frame. Time in Rachel is whatever is left.
That is a same-day trip only if you leave early, keep the stop short, and are honest about fatigue on the way home. It pairs poorly with a second big destination.
Road notes
US-93 and SR 375 are paved public highways. Services are sparse. Fill the tank before the empty stretch, in a town you can see is open, and do not count on cell service.
The test range is posted. Stay on public roads. Turn around at boundary signs. Dirt tracks toward the range are not a scenic extra, and they are not described here. Roadside objects people associate with the base, including mailboxes, get replaced and moved. A mailbox is not an entrance.
What you can see
From the public highway you can see desert, the Extraterrestrial Highway signs, Rachel, and whatever the inn and the roadside shop are doing that day. You should not expect a view of the airfield or of any aircraft program. If that is the requirement, this is the wrong day.
The inn’s alien-themed front is the town landmark. Treat it as a small business with limited seats, not as a national-park lodge. Hours are theirs.
Heat and safety
The highway sits in open desert. Summer afternoons commonly run above 100°F (38°C). Winter can be cold and windy. There is a long gap between places that can help if a tire fails.
Leave the route with someone. Carry water in the car. A boundary sign is the end of the interesting part, on purpose.
What the day looks like
Leave early. About two and a half hours each way to Rachel, a short stop at the inn or the roadside shop if they are open, and the drive home. Five hours of driving is the frame. The base is not a stop. Hours for the businesses in Rachel are theirs. This page does not quote them.

These boxes mark where a partner link will go. They are not links. They do not track visits, and they do not sell anything.
Car rental
A normal rental car is enough for the paved highways. You will drive it hard for one day. The car-rental link is reserved and empty.

Guided tours
Many advertised Area 51 tours are a ride to Rachel. A link belongs here only for a specific, current tour that stays on public roads. This page will not point anyone onto the restricted range.
