Weird Day Trips
Southern route to Laughlin
The southern route to Laughlin is about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours and on the order of 100 miles, on paved US-95 and NV-163. That is a planning number for a dry day, not a live traffic report. What you actually see is Searchlight, Spirit Mountain from the corridor, and a casino town on the Colorado River if you go the whole way.
This is the drive south: Las Vegas to Searchlight, then views of Spirit Mountain and Grapevine Canyon, then Laughlin on the Colorado River. The main roads are paved. You can make it a half-day look, a full-day loop, or a one-way trip that stops at the river.

Short history
Searchlight, about an hour out, is a living town from an 1897 gold boom, not an empty camp. It is the waypoint.
South of Searchlight, Spirit Mountain stands over the corridor. Its Mojave name is Avi Kwa Ame. It is a sacred landscape and the center of Avi Kwa Ame National Monument, designated in 2023. Grapevine Canyon holds a large concentration of petroglyphs. That stop is a cultural landscape, not a ghost town.
Laughlin is a modern casino town on the river, about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Las Vegas, on the order of 100 miles. The older story on this drive is the steamboats on the lower Colorado from the 1850s into the early 1900s, carrying supplies and ore for mines that included Eldorado Canyon, at Nelson, and Searchlight. The river was the highway before the railroads and the roads you are driving. Oatman, with wild burros on Route 66, is a side trip from Laughlin, not a separate day from the Strip.
Potosi is not on this route. It is southwest of the Strip in the Spring Mountains, about 30–35 miles out, near the Goodsprings and Pahrump corridor. It is Nevada’s oldest lode mine, with Mormon lead work in 1856. Almost no town is standing. The remnants are high on the mountain, on dirt, and it is not a casual rental-car stop.

Road notes
Christmas Tree Pass Road is the scenic unpaved option near Spirit Mountain. It is for dry weather only, and only after you check conditions. This page does not report washboard, storms, or whether that road is open.
Potosi’s access is dirt, in a different direction, and it is not a side trip from Searchlight.
What you can see
From the highway you can see the desert corridor and Spirit Mountain. Searchlight is a town you can actually stop in. Grapevine Canyon’s petroglyphs are off the highway. Look and do not touch the rock art, and check current monument guidance before you leave the pavement.
Laughlin, if you go that far, is a casino town on the Colorado River. The museum covers the steamboat years. Avi has a private river beach for hotel guests. Oatman is the burro town over Sitgreaves Pass: fill up first, because there is no gas on the last stretch. Lake Havasu is the far end, about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, or the next day after a night in Laughlin. Hours are not copied here.
Heat and safety
Summer afternoons in this part of the Mojave commonly sit above 100°F (38°C). A full loop to Laughlin and back is a lot of windshield in that heat. Start earlier, carry water, and treat the return as part of the plan.
This page does not name a temperature that makes the drive safe.

Combine this
Times below are planning figures. Conditions change. A north stop and a south stop do not belong in the same day. The return drive eats it.
This is the south chain: Nelson, Searchlight, Spirit Mountain, Laughlin, optional Oatman, and Lake Havasu as the next day. Lake Havasu is about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, or about 1 to 1.5 hours from Laughlin.
