Ghost Towns

Lost City Museum and Overton Day Trip from Las Vegas

The Lost City Museum in Overton is about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from Las Vegas, on the same paved drive as St. Thomas. That is a planning number, not live traffic. What you actually see is the state museum, reconstructed adobe pueblos, and a pithouse. Pair it with St. Thomas when the lake is low enough for the ruins walk.

Overton is the town on the way to St. Thomas, and the Lost City Museum is the stop that does not depend on the lake. The drive from central Las Vegas is about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, on I-15 to Exit 93 and then NV-169. That is a planning number for a dry day, not live traffic.

Short history

The Lost City Museum is a Nevada state museum built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Park Service. It was built to hold artifacts from the Pueblo Grande de Nevada, the sites called the Lost City, when Lake Mead threatened them.

Outside, reconstructed adobe pueblos and a pithouse stand on or near original foundations. Inside, the collection is pottery, tools, and local history. That is the story this page uses. It does not add legends on top of it.

Practical visitor info

Hours and fees change. Check the site, the park, or the business before you go. This page does not quote a current price or a current opening time.

The numbers match the drive times and distances page. Read desert day-trip tips before a hot day, and see sample itineraries if you want to combine stops. The town list is Ghost Towns Near Las Vegas. Tonopah and the Extraterrestrial Highway are indexed under Weird Day Trips.

How long is the drive to Overton and the Lost City Museum?

Plan on about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from central Las Vegas. Take I-15 to Exit 93, then NV-169 through the Moapa Valley into Overton. St. Thomas uses this same corridor, then continues toward the lake.

Those figures are rounded planning numbers for a dry day. They are not a live traffic report and not a promise about the entrance road at the reservoir.

Is the drive to Overton paved?

The highway into Overton is paved, and a normal rental car is the usual vehicle. The museum is in town, at 721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd. This page does not report construction on I-15 or NV-169.

What you can see

You are visiting a state museum: galleries of pottery, tools, and local history, plus the outdoor pueblos and pithouse. A picnic area and restrooms are on the grounds.

Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays. Admission is $8 for adults and seniors, and free for ages 17 and under. These hours and this admission change. Check the museum before you go.

Heat and safety

The valley is still the Mojave. Summer afternoons commonly sit above 100°F (38°C). The museum is the shade. The St. Thomas walk, if you add it, is short on the map and exposed on the ground.

This page does not name a temperature that makes the day safe. If the forecast is extreme, do not add the lakebed walk.

Pairing it with St. Thomas

When Lake Mead is low enough for the ruins walk, Overton and St. Thomas are an easy same-day pair. See the museum first, while it is open, then take the short walk at the lake. If the water is up, the museum is still the stop and the ruins are not.

Valley of Fire is in the same general direction if you want a longer day. This page does not set its hours or its fees. Heat still applies, and the St. Thomas walk does not get shorter because you added another park.

On the ground

What you can see

You can see the Lost City Museum, reconstructed adobe pueblos, a pithouse, and galleries of pottery, tools, and local history when the museum is open.

Private or off limits

Hours and the $8 adult admission change. Check the museum before you go. The outdoor pueblos are not a license to climb on them.

Summer and the season

Summer afternoons commonly sit above 100°F (38°C). See the museum first. Add the St. Thomas walk only when the lake is low and the heat allows a short exposed walk.

Combine this

Times below are planning figures. Conditions change. A north stop and a south stop do not belong in the same day. The return drive eats it.

Northeast, the Moapa Valley. Overton and the Lost City Museum, then St. Thomas when the lake is low. Valley of Fire is the longer day in this same direction. It does not combine with the drive south to Laughlin.
