Weird Day Trips
Ely and Great Basin as a Multi-Day Trip from Las Vegas
Ely is about 4 to 4.5 hours and about 240 to 250 miles from Las Vegas on direct US-93. That is a planning number, not live traffic. Same-day return is not realistic. What you actually see is a railroad town, then Great Basin National Park about an hour east.
Ely is a multi-day trip from central Las Vegas. The direct US-93 route is about 4 to 4.5 hours and about 240 to 250 miles. Same-day return from Las Vegas is not realistic. The Fallon, Sand Mountain, and US-50 path is longer, and it only makes sense as a multi-day loop or a central Nevada trek.

Short history
Ely is the base: the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, where visitors can sometimes operate a historic steam train, plus Hotel Nevada, murals, and mining history. Gas, food, and lodging are in town. The Ward Charcoal Ovens are nearby. Museum days and train seats change, and they are not copied here.
Great Basin National Park is about 1 hour east of Ely. The practical stops people mean are Lehman Caves, the bristlecone pines, Wheeler Peak, and dark skies. It is among the least-visited national parks. This page does not invent cave tour times or entrance fees.
Practical visitor info
Hours and fees change. Check the site, the park, or the business before you go. This page does not quote a current price or a current opening time.
The numbers match the drive times and distances page. Read desert day-trip tips before a hot day, and see sample itineraries if you want to combine stops. The town list is Ghost Towns Near Las Vegas. Tonopah and the Extraterrestrial Highway are indexed under Weird Day Trips.
How long is the drive to Ely?
Plan on about 4 to 4.5 hours and about 240 to 250 miles if you take US-93 straight from central Las Vegas. That is a rounded planning number for a dry day, not live traffic.
If you want the empty stretch and the dune, leave US-93 and use US-50 past Fallon and Sand Mountain, then Austin and Eureka, and sleep in Ely. That path is the trek. It is not a way to see the park and be back for dinner.
Is the direct drive to Ely paved?
Both highways are paved, and the middle of US-50 is remote. Between Fallon and Ely the towns are far apart and services are limited. Fuel and water planning matter. Cell service drops on stretches of this run.
What you can see
In Ely you can see a working railroad museum, a hotel street, and murals, and you can resupply. Great Basin, about an hour east, is the park: caves, old pines, a high peak, and a dark sky. Check the park for what is actually running.
Sand Mountain is the dune stop only if you chose the longer US-50 route. It is not a detour off the direct US-93 drive.
Heat and safety
The basin is high and the highway gaps are long. Summer afternoons can still be hot, and nights away from Las Vegas can be cold. Read the desert tips before you commit to the empty stretch.

Summer and the season
The highway gaps are long. Summer days can be hot and nights away from Las Vegas can be cold. Carry water for the empty stretch.
The town as a base, and the park as mountains, not as a ruin beside the Strip.

Combine this
Times below are planning figures. Conditions change. A north stop and a south stop do not belong in the same day. The return drive eats it.
North and central, as a longer run. Sand Mountain is the dune on US-50, about 25 miles east of Fallon. Ely is the overnight, about 4 to 4.5 hours from Las Vegas on direct US-93. Great Basin is about an hour east of Ely. Same-day return is not realistic, and this is not the Rhyolite day.
